How you can help at home

Encourage your child to do things independently at home e.g. dressing, tidying etc.  Talk to your child about what he/she has been doing at school.  Share books that they have brought home from the library and encourage them to share their reading scheme book.  These will start without words and are to introduce the children to books and new characters as well as encouraging them to tell a story using the pictures. Practice the sounds, actions and writing of the letters we are learning each week.  Learning the letter names and capitals comes a little later on. Your support with using sounds rather than letter names and lower case (little) rather than upper case (capital) letters at home will greatly help reinforce the teaching the children are receiving at school. Take any opportunities to practice saying numbers in order and counting with your child.  Please support your child to bring in any relevant items/information related to the topics we are covering, show and tell will be on a Friday.  Please continue to share with us any relevant information about your child’s learning/interests at home using our home/school book so that we can build on this further in school.

PE/Games

In addition to our fine and gross motor control activities within both our indoor and outdoor learning areas, we will have specific PE times during the week for the whole class in the playground and hall.

These are:

Thursday mornings – Dance/gym in hall

Friday mornings – Outdoor PE (games/using equipment)

Please ensure that your child has a named PE kit which stays in school all week and only goes home on Fridays for any necessary washing. There is always a possibility that we have to change a PE slot!  During the colder months your child should also have a sweatshirt and jogging bottoms for outdoor PE.

Other Information

  • Please ensure that your child brings a coat to school every day, as it is important for the children to be able to play out of doors unless the weather is very bad.
  • Please provide your child with a separate named bottle of water each day, even if they have milk.
  • The children need to bring in their book bag, with reading scheme book and reading record book every day.  Please write in their reading record book every time you share the book with them.
  • Despite our wonderful selection of school resources, we are always grateful in Reception for the following items: kitchen rolls, boxes, miniature plastic bottles, washing up bottles, buttons, wool, thread, fabric, dressing up resources (beads, bags, hats, shoes etc) and newspapers.

If you have any further questions or concerns at any time please do not hesitate to ask me.

Thank you for your support
